Architectural vs. 3-Tab Shingles: What Actually Survives Long Island Wind

October 14, 2026 · 6 min read · AP Siding & Windows

On Long Island, architectural shingles are the right answer for almost every house, and the reason is wind. A standard 3-tab shingle is rated for roughly 60 to 70 mph. The architectural lines we install, GAF Timberline HDZ, Owens Corning Duration and CertainTeed Landmark Pro, carry 110 to 130 mph ratings when installed to the manufacturer's spec. A nor'easter coming across the Great South Bay or down the Sound gusts past the first number regularly and rarely reaches the second. That gap is the difference between a roof you forget about and one you photograph for an adjuster.

Three-tab is not a bad product. It is the right product for a shed, a detached garage, or a house you are selling next spring. Here is how the two compare on what matters on this island.

What the two shingles are

3-tab shingles are a single flat layer of asphalt-coated fiberglass mat with two slots cut into the exposed edge, so each strip looks like three separate tiles. They lie flat, read as a uniform grid from the street, and were the default roof on every Long Island subdivision built from the 1950s through the 1990s.

Architectural shingles, also called dimensional or laminated, are two layers bonded together with the top layer cut in a random pattern. They are heavier, thicker at the butt edge, and cast a shadow line that looks like wood shake or slate from the curb. They have been the standard residential shingle for about 20 years.

Wind: the Long Island question

This is where the comparison ends for most homes near the water.

Shingles fail in wind by lifting at the exposed edge, breaking the seal strip, creasing, and then tearing off. A 3-tab has three separate tabs per strip, each with its own edge to catch. An architectural shingle has one continuous laminated edge, more weight holding it down, and a wider nailing zone. GAF's HDZ line adds a reinforced nailing strip the company calls LayerLock, and all three major lines offer an enhanced wind warranty, up to 130 mph, when the roof is installed with the specified number of nails in the specified zone and the matching starter and ridge products.

Two things to know about those ratings. First, they are only valid on a correctly installed roof; a 130 mph shingle with four nails in the wrong place is a 60 mph shingle. Second, the standard tests (ASTM D7158 Class H for 150 mph, D3161 Class F for 110 mph) measure uplift on a sealed shingle, which is why we never install in weather that keeps the seal strip from bonding.

On a south-facing roof in Lindenhurst, a bluff lot in Rocky Point or anywhere in Hampton Bays, we do not install 3-tab, and we will say so if asked.

Lifespan

Three-tab shingles typically last 15 to 20 years in our climate. Architectural shingles last 25 to 30, and the premium lines carry limited lifetime material warranties. The gap comes from thickness: there is more asphalt and granule on a laminated shingle, so it takes longer for sun and freeze-thaw to wear through. Salt air and the summer humidity that feeds algae growth shorten both, which is why we spec algae-resistant granules on every roof.

Look

Architectural shingles were designed to imitate cedar shake and slate, and from the curb on a colonial or a cape they do a credible job. Three-tab reads as flat and uniform. On a 1960s ranch that is part of the original look and some homeowners prefer it. On most Long Island homes the dimensional roof photographs better in a listing and matches what the neighbors have put on in the last decade.

Warranty

The three lines we install all offer tiered warranties, and the top tier on each, GAF Golden Pledge, Owens Corning Platinum Protection and CertainTeed 5-Star SureStart, requires a full system from that manufacturer (underlayment, starter, ridge, ventilation) installed by a contractor the manufacturer has certified. We are a GAF Master Elite contractor, which is what unlocks the Golden Pledge tier: 50-year non-prorated material coverage and 25-year workmanship. Three-tab shingles come with a basic limited warranty and do not qualify for the enhanced tiers.

Weight and your roof structure

Architectural shingles are heavier, roughly 50 percent more per square than 3-tab. On a sound roof deck this does not matter. On an older house where a second layer of roofing was already laid over the first, it is one more reason to tear off rather than add a third layer. New York's residential code limits layers anyway, and we tear off to the deck on every replacement.

When 3-tab still makes sense

  • A detached garage, shed or pool house where the wind exposure is low and the roof is simple
  • A flip or a sale within a year, where the roof needs to pass inspection and the buyer will likely replace it
  • A historic-style house where the flat tab pattern is part of the original look and the roof is sheltered
  • Matching an existing 3-tab roof on a small addition until the whole roof is replaced

In each case we will install it correctly, with six nails and a sealed starter, and we will tell you what the wind rating means for the next storm.

Which one for your house

Your situation Our usual recommendation
Any house within a mile of the Sound, the bay or the ocean Architectural, high-wind installation, enhanced warranty tier
Colonial, cape or split in central Suffolk, staying 10+ years Architectural
Historic or mid-century home where the flat look matters, sheltered lot Either; architectural if you plan to stay
Detached garage or shed 3-tab is fine
Selling within a year 3-tab passes; architectural sells

We will show you both shingles on your own roof color, explain the nailing pattern we use for the wind on your lot, and write up the warranty tier your house qualifies for. The inspection is free. Call (631) 972-0873 or request an estimate.

Common questions

What wind rating do shingles need on Long Island?

At least 110 mph for inland homes and 130 mph near the water, which means an architectural shingle installed to the manufacturer's high-wind nailing pattern. Standard 3-tab is rated for roughly 60 to 70 mph.

Do architectural shingles last longer than 3-tab?

Yes. Expect 25 to 30 years from architectural shingles in Long Island conditions versus 15 to 20 from 3-tab, with premium architectural lines carrying limited lifetime warranties.

Can I put architectural shingles over an existing 3-tab roof?

It is done, but we do not recommend it. The uneven base telegraphs through, the extra weight adds up, and it hides deck damage. Tear off to the deck.

Are architectural shingles much more expensive?

They cost more per square, but the difference is a modest part of a full roof once tear-off, underlayment and labor are counted, and they last longer.

Which brand is best, GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed?

All three make excellent architectural lines, and the installation matters more than the badge. We install all three and will recommend one based on the color you want, the warranty tier you want and what is in stock.

Does a 130 mph shingle really hold in a nor'easter?

When it is installed with the specified nailing pattern, starter strip and ridge, and the seal strip has bonded, yes. The roofs we see fail in storms are almost always nailing or sealing problems, not shingle problems.
