Siding That Survives Asharoken's Exposure
Asharoken is a village of a few hundred homes strung along Asharoken Avenue, the causeway that links Northport to Eaton's Neck, plus the neighborhoods on the Eaton's Neck side. Nearly every house is on or near the water. The stock ranges from 1920s and 30s summer cottages that were winterized decades ago, to mid-century ranches on the bay side, to substantial contemporary homes rebuilt after storms on the Sound side. AP Siding & Windows installs cedar shake, vinyl shake, horizontal lap, insulated vinyl, board and batten, and fiber cement, and in Asharoken we spec every one of them for salt, wind, and the occasional storm surge.
Nowhere else we work gets weather from both sides. The Sound beach along the north of Asharoken Avenue takes the full force of northeast storms, and the bay side gets southwest wind across Northport Bay. Salt is on every wall. We use stainless fasteners, marine-grade flashing, and materials that do not rely on paint. On the low-lying causeway lots, flood elevation matters, and we detail the bottom courses to handle water rather than trap it. Many of the older cottages have been raised or rebuilt, and we see both sound new framing and tired original sheathing, sometimes on the same house.
Siding styles we install
Horizontal Vinyl Lap Siding
The classic look for the capes, ranches, and colonials that fill Asharoken. Low maintenance, available in dozens of colors, and never needs painting.
Vinyl Shake & Shingle Siding
The look of cedar shakes without staining, splitting, or rotting. Works on a whole home or as an accent on gables and dormers.
Board & Batten Siding
Vertical siding for farmhouse, modern, and coastal exteriors, often combined with lap siding for contrast.
Fiber Cement Siding
The premium option: heavy, fire-resistant, and very durable, with a real painted-wood look.
Signs it's time to replace your siding
- Cracked, warped, or loose panels, especially after a storm
- Faded or chalky color that no longer cleans up
- Soft spots, rot, or mildew along seams and trim
- Water stains or peeling paint on interior walls
- Drafty rooms and rising heating and cooling bills
Siding and windows in one project
Replacing windows at the same time as siding is the smartest way to do both. With the old siding off, new windows can be flashed and sealed properly on every side, and all the exterior trim comes out clean and consistent. You get one crew and one schedule for the whole exterior.

Asharoken from the Causeway to Eaton's Neck
Asharoken Avenue itself is the heart of the village, with houses on the Sound side facing the open beach and houses on the bay side facing Northport Bay and the Northport Yacht Club moorings. The Eaton's Neck end of the village, near Asharoken Beach and the roads that climb toward Eaton's Neck Road, has larger lots and the biggest homes. Duck Island, on the bay side, has its own small cluster. The village line runs just past the Northport Village boundary near Bevin Road, where the causeway begins. Beyond the village, Eaton's Neck proper and the Coast Guard station are in the Town of Huntington.
Asharoken, Eaton's Neck, and the Northport Shore
We serve every home inside the Village of Asharoken, both sides of the causeway and the Eaton's Neck end, and we also work the unincorporated Eaton's Neck addresses beyond the village line. Northport Village and East Northport are the first stops on the route, with Fort Salonga and Centerport across the water.
All siding townsFrequently asked questions
Is siding more expensive in Asharoken because of the waterfront?
The materials and hardware we use on a Sound-facing wall cost a bit more than inland grade, and the exposed lots can mean slower work on windy days, but the price is still set by measured wall area, material, tear-off, and trim. Vinyl remains the lowest-cost option, fiber cement the highest. We measure in person and give you a written number that includes the marine-grade details.
Who issues the building permit for siding in Asharoken?
Asharoken is an incorporated village with its own Building Department, so permits come from the Village of Asharoken, not the Town of Huntington. The village pays close attention to work on waterfront and flood-zone lots, and some projects also involve state coastal rules. A simple re-side may be exempt, but we confirm with the village before starting and handle any filing required.
What siding actually lasts on a house facing the Sound in Asharoken?
Fiber cement is the most durable choice for a north-facing Sound wall. It does not warp, chalk, or corrode, and it takes paint well when you want it. Insulated vinyl is a strong second and needs no paint at all. Cedar shake is traditional on the older cottages and looks right, but plan on sealing it. Whatever you pick, we use stainless fasteners and marine-grade flashing.
How long will an Asharoken siding job take?
A vinyl re-side on an average-size Asharoken ranch or cottage takes three to five working days in good weather. Larger Eaton's Neck homes and fiber cement installs take longer. The honest answer here is that wind is the variable. Days when the Sound is blowing hard are not safe for siding an exposed wall, so we build weather into the schedule.
Can you replace windows and siding together on my Asharoken house?
Yes, and on the water it is the right order. Windows on a Sound-facing wall need to be flashed to the sheathing and sealed before the siding goes on, which is only possible when both are done together. We install double-hung, casement, bay and bow, slider, awning, basement, and custom-shape windows in vinyl or fiberglass, and we recommend impact-resistant glass on the most exposed elevations.
My Asharoken house is in a flood zone and has been raised. Does that change the siding job?
It does. On a raised house the lower wall and the area around the new foundation or piers need careful detailing so that storm water drains out rather than collecting behind the siding. We use flood-tolerant materials on the bottom courses and vent the enclosure where the village and FEMA rules call for it. We also check that the flashing at the old-to-new framing transition is sound.
Why Asharoken Homeowners Choose AP
- In-house crews. Working on a windy Sound-side wall takes a crew that trusts each other. AP's installers are our own employees and have worked the Asharoken causeway before.
- Written price after we measure. We measure in person and specify the marine-grade hardware and flood-zone details in writing, so there are no surprises on a waterfront job.
- Based nearby in East Northport. Asharoken is about 10 minutes from our shop through Northport Village and over the causeway. We can be there quickly before a storm or after one.
