Siding for Greenlawn, From Broadway to the Back Streets
Greenlawn started as a farming stop on the railroad and still has a small village center around Broadway and the LIRR station with homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Around that core, the 1950s and 60s filled in with capes, ranches, and splits on quarter and half-acre lots, and the north side toward Centerport picked up larger colonials in the 70s and 80s. Plenty of the older homes carry aluminum over original cedar. AP Siding & Windows installs horizontal lap, insulated vinyl, vinyl shake, cedar shake, board and batten, and fiber cement, and we treat the station-area houses with the care their age calls for.
Greenlawn is mostly sheltered, tucked between Huntington and East Northport with no direct waterfront. The northern streets toward Centerport Harbor and Mill Pond get some breeze off the water, but for most of the hamlet the siding challenges are age, shade, and sun. The village-center homes have trees that have been growing for a century and north walls that never fully dry, so we open those carefully and expect sheathing work. The postwar streets have the usual sunny south walls that fade thin vinyl. We spec heavier material where the sun hits and drainage where the shade sits.
Siding styles we install
Horizontal Vinyl Lap Siding
The classic look for the capes, ranches, and colonials that fill Greenlawn. Low maintenance, available in dozens of colors, and never needs painting.
Vinyl Shake & Shingle Siding
The look of cedar shakes without staining, splitting, or rotting. Works on a whole home or as an accent on gables and dormers.
Board & Batten Siding
Vertical siding for farmhouse, modern, and coastal exteriors, often combined with lap siding for contrast.
Fiber Cement Siding
The premium option: heavy, fire-resistant, and very durable, with a real painted-wood look.
Signs it's time to replace your siding
- Cracked, warped, or loose panels, especially after a storm
- Faded or chalky color that no longer cleans up
- Soft spots, rot, or mildew along seams and trim
- Water stains or peeling paint on interior walls
- Drafty rooms and rising heating and cooling bills
Siding and windows in one project
Replacing windows at the same time as siding is the smartest way to do both. With the old siding off, new windows can be flashed and sealed properly on every side, and all the exterior trim comes out clean and consistent. You get one crew and one schedule for the whole exterior.

Greenlawn Sections We Work In
The Broadway corridor around the Greenlawn LIRR station and the old firehouse is the historic center, with Victorians and foursquares on narrow deep lots. Pulaski Road forms the southern edge, and the streets just north of it are 50s capes and ranches. Centerport Road and Park Avenue run north toward Centerport with 60s and 70s splits and colonials on larger wooded lots. The area near Greenlawn Park and Harborfields High School has mid-century development. Toward Cuba Hill Road and the East Northport line the housing is 50s and 60s on grid streets. A few older farm parcels and estate remnants survive off Little Plains Road.
Greenlawn and the Harborfields Area
We cover all of Greenlawn, from Pulaski Road on the south to the Centerport line on the north, and from Park Avenue east to Cuba Hill Road and East Northport. It is one of the closest hamlets to our shop. Huntington, Centerport, and East Northport are on the same daily run, along with Huntington Station.
All siding townsFrequently asked questions
What affects the price of re-siding a house in Greenlawn?
The measured square footage of the walls comes first, then the material, how many old layers we strip, and the amount of trim and window wrap. A Broadway-area Victorian with corner boards and casings is more labor than a cape near Pulaski Road of the same size. Vinyl is the low-cost route and fiber cement the premium. The price is written, after an in-person measure.
Does the Town of Huntington require a permit for siding in Greenlawn?
Greenlawn is a hamlet without its own government, so the Town of Huntington Building Division is the permit authority. A like-for-like siding replacement is usually exempt. Jobs that replace sheathing, repair framing, remove asbestos-cement shingle, or change window openings may need a filing. We look at your scope, tell you which it is, and handle the paperwork if any is required.
What siding suits the older homes near Greenlawn's village center?
The late-1800s houses around Broadway were built with cedar shingle or clapboard, and they look best in something that keeps those proportions. Fiber cement in a narrow lap or shingle profile does it well and holds paint. Vinyl shake is the lower-maintenance alternative. On the shaded lots we build in drainage behind the siding. For the postwar streets, insulated vinyl is the practical choice.
How long does a typical Greenlawn siding job run?
A vinyl re-side on an average Greenlawn cape, ranch, or split takes three to five working days. The older station-area homes with trim and probable sheathing repairs take longer, and so does fiber cement. Rain is the usual cause of a slipped date. Since Greenlawn is close to our shop, we can start promptly and keep the crew on site until the job is done.
Should I replace windows at the same time I re-side my Greenlawn house?
If they are older than about twenty years, we recommend it. With the siding off we can install double-hung, casement, slider, bay and bow, awning, basement, and custom-shape windows in vinyl or fiberglass, flashed to the sheathing. On the Victorian and foursquare homes we can keep the tall sash proportions. Combining the work means one project, one crew, and a tighter wall than doing the windows later.
My Greenlawn house has aluminum siding over the original cedar. What happens when you remove it?
We take the aluminum off and look at the cedar underneath. Sometimes it is dry and solid enough to stay as a backing under house wrap. More often on the older Greenlawn homes the courses below the windows and at the corners are soft and come out. We repair the sheathing, wrap the wall, and install the new siding. The written estimate includes a repair allowance.
