Siding Done Right on Hauppauge Homes
Hauppauge is better known for its industrial park than its houses, but the residential streets on either side of Veterans Memorial Highway hold a solid stock of 1960s through 1980s colonials, splits, and high ranches, many on half-acre lots in the Smithtown section and quarter-acre lots on the Islip side. Most have been re-sided once, usually with vinyl that is now 30 years old and showing it. AP Siding & Windows removes that layer, checks the sheathing, and installs horizontal lap, insulated vinyl, vinyl shake, board and batten, or fiber cement. We also handle the window replacement and roofing that often come due on the same house.
Hauppauge is inland with no salt exposure, but it is not without weather. The Nissequogue River headwaters and the wooded areas around Blydenburgh Park keep the northern lots shaded and humid, and old siding there shows algae and soft trim. The flatter, more open streets near the industrial park and the Expressway take full sun and wind, and that is where you see warped panels and faded color. We treat the two conditions differently. Breathable wrap and good drainage behind the siding on shaded lots, heavier UV-stable panels on the open ones, and solid flashing everywhere.
Siding services we provide in Hauppauge
Siding replacement
Full tear-off to sheathing, repair of anything we find underneath, new water-resistive barrier, and new siding with trim. This is most of our Hauppauge work.
Siding repair
Storm damage, cracked or loose panels, and rot behind the siding. Worth doing when the rest of the wall has life left in it, and worth being honest about when it does not.
Insulated vinyl siding
Contoured foam backing that adds R-value across the studs, stiffens the panel and cuts outside noise.
Fiber cement siding
James Hardie and similar. The choice where profile and trim detail have to look right.
Cedar and cedar-profile siding
Natural cedar shake and clapboard for period homes, plus cedar-look vinyl and composite when you want the appearance without the maintenance.
Trim, soffit, fascia and gutters
Aluminum trim wrap on windows and doors, plus new soffit and fascia so the whole exterior finishes at the same time rather than in two visits a year apart.
What we would put on a Hauppauge house
- Insulated vinyl is what we recommend most often here, because it suits the post-war stock this town is full of. These houses were framed 2x4 with thin wall insulation, and the contoured foam backing adds R-value across the studs where the framing normally bleeds heat straight out. It also stiffens the panel, which matters on the long flat runs of a ranch or split where standard vinyl can read wavy.
- Fiber cement is the choice for the colonials and for the older houses where profile and trim detail have to look right. It holds a painted finish for years, will not soften in summer heat, and carries a Class A fire rating. It is heavier and needs a flat, sound nailing surface, which is part of why we tear off rather than go over.
- Standard vinyl still does the job on a defined budget, and modern fade-resistant panels in the right profile look considerably better than what went on these houses in 1991. On the shaded lots we will steer you away from the palest colours, because that is where the green cast shows worst.
What siding costs in Hauppauge
We do not quote over the phone, because phone numbers change once somebody actually looks at the house, and that is how homeowners end up with a price that moves after the contract is signed. What we can tell you is what drives the number.
Square footage and elevation count
A cape with four simple elevations prices very differently from a split level with dormers, gable returns and a bump-out.
Material
Standard vinyl, insulated vinyl and fiber cement sit at three different price points, and the gap widens on larger houses.
What is behind the old siding
On houses that were re-sided over the original material in the 80s or 90s, there is a real chance of sheathing repair once we tear off. We open a section during the estimate specifically so it does not become a change order later.
Trim scope
Whether you wrap the windows and doors and replace soffit and fascia at the same time. Doing it together costs less than doing it twice.
You get an itemized written price after we measure on site, and it does not change unless you change the scope.
Permits for siding work in Hauppauge
Worth knowing before you start: Hauppauge sits in two townships.
Part of Hauppauge is in the Town of Smithtown and part is in the Town of Islip. Which one your property falls in decides where the permit is filed, what it costs, and how long the review takes. Houses on the same road can be under different building departments, and the address alone will not tell you which.
We confirm the jurisdiction for your address before anything gets filed. Five minutes of checking, and it avoids the kind of delay that pushes a spring job into summer.
How the job runs
- One We come out, measure, and open a section of the existing siding so you can see what is behind it. No phone estimates.
- Two You get an itemized written price with the material, colour, trim scope and expected schedule on it.
- Three We confirm the permit authority for your address and file what is required.
- Four Our own installers do the work. Tear-off to sheathing, any repairs, new water-resistive barrier, then siding and trim. Deliveries get staged neatly, the driveway stays usable, and we magnet-sweep for nails before we pull out each day.
- Five Walkthrough with you before we call it finished.

Hauppauge Neighborhoods We Serve
North of Veterans Highway in the Smithtown section, the streets around Town Line Road, Hauppauge Road, and the area near Blydenburgh County Park have larger colonials and splits on wooded half-acre lots. The neighborhoods near Hauppauge High School and Lincoln Boulevard are 60s and 70s construction on generous lots. South of Veterans Highway toward the Expressway, in the Islip portion, the homes are a bit smaller and the lots flatter, with ranches and high ranches off Wheeler Road and near Old Willets Path. The Nissequogue River cuts through the north, and some homes back up to it.
Both Halves of Hauppauge
We cover the Smithtown section north of Veterans Highway and the Islip section south of it, right down to the Expressway and over to the Islandia line. Hauppauge is one of the closer hamlets to our shop, and the same crew handles Commack, Smithtown, and Nesconset on the same route.
All siding townsFrequently asked questions
What determines the cost of siding a Hauppauge colonial?
Two-story colonials have a lot of wall, and that square footage is the biggest factor. After that it comes down to the material you pick, whether the old siding gets removed, and how much trim, soffit, and window wrap the house has. Vinyl costs the least and fiber cement the most. We measure the whole house in person before giving you a written price.
Which town do I pull a siding permit from in Hauppauge?
It depends on which side of the town line you live on. Addresses north of Veterans Highway are generally in the Town of Smithtown and go through the Smithtown Building Department. Addresses to the south are usually in the Town of Islip and go through the Islip Building Division. We verify your jurisdiction and file whatever is required for your project.
What siding holds up on a wooded Hauppauge lot?
The shaded lots in the northern section near the river and the park hold moisture, which is tough on cedar and on cheap vinyl with no drainage behind it. Fiber cement and insulated vinyl both resist that. The real fix is behind the panel: breathable house wrap and a drainage path so water can escape. Sunnier lots near the industrial park get heavier UV-stable vinyl.
How long does a siding job take in Hauppauge?
A vinyl re-side on a typical Hauppauge split or ranch takes three to five working days. A full two-story colonial or a fiber cement job runs longer because there is more wall and the material takes more time to cut and hang. Rain can push things by a day or two. We give you a planned start and finish when we quote.
Can I replace windows while you re-side my Hauppauge house?
Yes. Many Hauppauge homes still have 1980s replacement windows that were installed over the old siding and never flashed properly. With the siding off we can set new double-hung, casement, bay and bow, sliders, awning, or basement windows in vinyl or fiberglass, flash them into the sheathing, and side right up to the new frames. It is the cleanest way to stop drafts.
My Hauppauge home backs up to the Nissequogue. Is there anything special about that?
Homes along the river and near Blydenburgh Park sit in some of the dampest, most shaded conditions in the hamlet, with green film on north walls and soft trim. We pay attention to ventilation behind the siding, keep the bottom course clear of mulch, and use fasteners that will not corrode. If your lot touches a mapped wetland buffer, the Town may add review.
