Siding Work for Riverhead's Mix of Old and New
Riverhead is the county seat, and it has the widest spread of housing on the East End. Around Main Street and Griffing Avenue there are late 1800s two-stories and Queen Annes, many still under clapboard or asbestos shingle. Polish Town and the streets off Roanoke Avenue are tighter lots with capes and bungalows from the 30s through the 50s. North of Route 58 and along Sound Avenue the lots open up into farmhouses and newer colonials. AP Siding & Windows re-sides all of it with horizontal vinyl, insulated vinyl, vinyl or cedar shake, board and batten, and fiber cement, with windows and roofing in the same stretch of work.
Riverhead has two water stories. The north side, from Baiting Hollow across to Reeves Beach, takes Long Island Sound wind head-on across open farm fields with nothing to slow it down. The south side sits on the Peconic River and Flanders Bay, where the air is damp more than salty and shade from mature trees keeps siding wet longer. Out in the fields we run tighter nailing schedules and lean on insulated vinyl or fiber cement that will not chalk in full sun. Near the river we spend more time on house wrap, drainage behind the siding, and getting trim off the soil line so it stops wicking.

Siding replacement
Full tear-off to sheathing, repair of what we find underneath, new water-resistive barrier, new siding and trim.
Siding repair
Storm damage, cracked or loose panels, and rot behind the siding.
Insulated vinyl siding
Foam-backed panel that adds R-value across the studs and keeps long runs flat.
Fiber cement siding
James Hardie and similar, where profile and trim detail have to look right.
Cedar and cedar-profile siding
Natural shake and clapboard for period homes, or the look without the upkeep.
Trim, soffit, fascia and gutters
So the whole exterior finishes at once rather than in two visits a year apart.
What we would put on a Riverhead house
- Fiber cement Performs well on exposed Riverhead houses. It holds a painted finish in salt air, resists wind-driven debris impact better than lighter materials, and carries a Class A fire rating. It needs a flat, sound nailing surface, which is part of why we tear off rather than install over.
- Insulated vinyl Suits the compact post-war stock here, adding R-value across the studs on houses framed 2x4 with thin wall insulation. Near the water we pay more attention to the fastening and the bottom-course detailing than to the panel itself.
- Standard vinyl Holds up near the bay better than people expect, because it has no finish to lose to salt. The decisions that matter more here are the fastening and what we find at the bottom of the wall during tear-off.
Permits for siding work in Riverhead
Exterior work here permits through the Town of Riverhead Building Department.
Riverhead is a smaller township than Brookhaven and the review process generally moves accordingly, but the town also covers a lot of ground where properties sit close to water, and shoreline proximity can bring additional review that an inland lot never sees.
We confirm what applies to your address before anything is filed.
How the job runs
- One We measure on site and open a section of the existing siding so you can see what is behind it. No phone estimates.
- Two You get an itemized written price with material, colour, trim scope and schedule on it.
- Three We confirm the permit authority for your address and file what is required.
- Four Our own installers do the work. Tear-off to sheathing, repairs, new water-resistive barrier, then siding and trim. Driveway stays usable and we magnet-sweep for nails before we leave each day.
- Five Walkthrough with you before we call it finished.

Riverhead Areas We Cover
Downtown Riverhead and the blocks around Pulaski Street and Osborn Avenue have the oldest frame houses, often with two or three layers of siding stacked up. Polish Town, around Marcy Avenue and St. Isidore's, is small capes and bungalows close together. Reeves Park and the lanes north of Sound Avenue are the most wind-exposed homes in the hamlet, with cottages and year-round houses near the bluff. Baiting Hollow mixes vineyard-view ranches with older summer places. South of the river, Riverside and the Flanders Road corridor are modest ranches and capes under heavy tree cover. Along Route 58 the newer subdivisions are mostly 90s and 2000s vinyl colonials.
Riverhead, Baiting Hollow, Reeves Park and the River Corridor
We take jobs across the full Riverhead hamlet, from downtown and Polish Town north through Sound Avenue, Reeves Park and Baiting Hollow, and south over the river into Riverside and Flanders. Riverhead is our staging point for the whole North Fork, so Aquebogue, Calverton and Jamesport usually get scheduled on the same runs.
All siding townsFrequently asked questions
What should I expect to pay for new siding on a Riverhead house?
A downtown two-story with three layers of old siding and a 90s colonial off Route 58 with clean sheathing will not price the same. We base the number on measured square footage, the material you pick, tear-off, and how much trim and window wrap the house needs. Vinyl is the cheapest route, fiber cement the dearest. The figure is written, after we measure.
Does Riverhead require a building permit for siding, and who handles it?
Riverhead is an unincorporated hamlet, so permits go through the Town of Riverhead Building Department on Howell Avenue. Swapping siding like for like generally does not need one. Replacing rotted sheathing, altering window openings, or structural repair usually does, and some downtown properties sit in overlay zones with their own review. We sort out what applies before quoting and file on your behalf.
Which siding holds up to the open wind along Sound Avenue?
North of Sound Avenue there is nothing between the house and the Sound but farm fields, and the wind shows it. Insulated vinyl stiffens the panel so it does not rattle or lift, and fiber cement simply does not move. Either way we add fasteners and lock the starter strip and corners. Cedar is fine downtown but takes a beating on the bluff.
How many days does a Riverhead siding job usually take?
Figure three to five working days for a vinyl re-side on an average Riverhead cape or colonial. The older downtown and Polish Town houses add time when we find multiple layers or bad sheathing. Fiber cement runs longer. Riverhead is a drive for us, so we book in blocks, and weather can push a block a day or two.
Can I bundle window replacement with the siding on my Riverhead home?
Yes, and we recommend it on the older houses especially. Once the walls are open we can pull out tired wood double-hungs, set new vinyl or fiberglass units, flash them into the sheathing, and bring the new siding right to the frame. We also install casements, bay and bow, sliders, awning and basement windows. One crew, one schedule, and no cutting into finished siding later.
My Riverhead house is in Reeves Park near the bluff. Anything different there?
Reeves Park and the lanes toward Baiting Hollow are the most exposed homes in the hamlet, and a few sit close enough to the bluff that erosion setbacks and Town coastal rules come into play. Siding by itself seldom triggers that, but we check your lot before we quote. On those houses we use stainless fasteners and step up the flashing at every opening.
Why Riverhead Homeowners Choose AP
- In-house crews. Riverhead jobs get our own installers, the same people who do our work out west. We do not hand East End projects to a local sub we do not supervise.
- Written price after we measure. We come out, measure every elevation, look at what is under the old siding where we can, and send a written price. No ballpark over the phone.
- Based nearby in East Northport. Riverhead is roughly 45 minutes east of our shop on the LIE, which is why we schedule North Fork jobs in blocks and start early. Once the crew is on site, we stay until the house is done.
