Siding That Belongs on a Northport Village House
Northport Village is one of the oldest intact waterfront villages on the North Shore, and the houses along Main Street, Bayview Avenue, and Woodbine Avenue go back to the shipbuilding and oystering days. Many still have cedar shingle or clapboard, some hidden under aluminum from the 60s. Up the hill toward Ocean Avenue and Scudder Avenue the stock shifts to 1920s bungalows and postwar capes, with larger homes on the bluffs near Steers Pit and the Eaton's Neck road. AP Siding & Windows installs cedar shake, vinyl shake, horizontal lap, insulated vinyl, board and batten, and fiber cement, and we make modern material look right on a 19th-century house.
Northport Harbor runs straight up into the middle of the village, so wind and salt reach farther inland here than people assume. Walls facing the water or the open north take the brunt. We use stainless or hot-dipped fasteners, extra flashing at the corners and windows, and materials that do not depend on paint. On the older houses the bigger problem is what has been going on behind the siding for a hundred years, and we expect to repair sheathing and sill areas once the old layers come off. The village also has an architectural review process on some properties, and we work within it.
Siding styles we install
Horizontal Vinyl Lap Siding
The classic Long Island look for colonials, capes, and ranches. Low maintenance, available in dozens of colors, and never needs painting.
Vinyl Shake & Shingle Siding
The look of cedar shakes without staining, splitting, or rotting. A good fit for gables, dormers, and accent walls, or for an entire shingle-style home.
Board & Batten Siding
Vertical siding for farmhouse, modern, and coastal exteriors. It's often combined with lap siding to add contrast and curb appeal.
Fiber Cement Siding
The premium option: heavier, fire-resistant, and extremely durable. It holds up well near the water and holds paint for years. It's a popular choice for historic-style homes where the owner wants the look of wood.
Signs it's time to replace your siding
- Cracked, warped, or loose panels, especially after a storm
- Faded or chalky color that no longer cleans up
- Soft spots, peeling paint inside, or water stains near exterior walls
- Mold, mildew, or rot along seams and trim
- Rising heating and cooling bills from a drafty exterior
Siding and windows in one project
Many Northport homeowners replace their windows at the same time as their siding, and it's the smartest time to do it. With the old siding off, we can flash and seal new windows properly on all sides, and the exterior trim comes out clean and consistent. It's one crew, one schedule, and one point of contact for your whole exterior.

Northport Village Streets We Know
Main Street and the blocks running down to the harbor and the village dock hold the shopfronts and the old captains' houses, many on narrow lots with little side yard. Bayview Avenue follows the water with a row of larger historic homes facing the harbor. Woodbine Avenue, Scudder Avenue, and Ocean Avenue climb the hill with Victorians giving way to bungalows and capes. The area near Northport Village Park and the Steers Pit beach has mid-century homes on sloping lots. Toward the Asharoken causeway and Eaton's Neck Road the houses are more exposed and more valuable. The village ends at the Northport hamlet line east of Fort Salonga Road.
Northport Village and the Harbor
We serve the whole incorporated village, from the harbor dock up the hill to the Fort Salonga Road line, plus the unincorporated Northport addresses just outside it that share the 11768 ZIP. East Northport, Asharoken, Fort Salonga, and Centerport are on the same short route from our shop.
All siding townsFrequently asked questions
What goes into the price of re-siding a historic Northport Village house?
The old harbor-side houses have more trim, more corners, and usually more layers to remove than a postwar cape up the hill, so labor is a larger share. Beyond that it is measured wall area, the material you choose, tear-off, and trim detail. Vinyl is the economical choice and fiber cement the premium. We measure in person and the number you get is written.
Who issues the permit for siding in Northport Village?
Northport is an incorporated village, so the Village of Northport Building Department, not the Town of Huntington, handles permits inside the village line. A like-for-like re-side may be exempt, but the village looks closely at exterior changes, and some properties fall under architectural review. If your address is in the Northport hamlet outside the village, the Town is the authority. We confirm which applies.
Which siding stands up to the salt air off Northport Harbor?
Harbor-facing walls on Bayview and the lower village streets get salt and wind most of the year. Fiber cement and insulated vinyl both hold up with no paint. Vinyl shake keeps the shingle look the old houses were built with and needs almost no upkeep. Real cedar is an option but expect to seal the weather side. We upgrade hardware and flashing on every harbor-side job.
How long does a siding project take in Northport?
On an average cape or bungalow up the hill, a vinyl re-side runs three to five working days. The harbor-side Victorians with their trim and the near-certain sheathing repairs take longer, as does any fiber cement job. Wind off the harbor can cost a day here and there. We schedule after the measure and tell you promptly if weather pushes anything.
Can AP replace the windows on my Northport house while re-siding?
Yes, and in the village it is usually the right call. Old wood sash and 1970s replacements were rarely flashed to the wall. With the siding off we install double-hung, casement, bay and bow, slider, awning, basement, and custom-shape windows in vinyl or fiberglass, flashed to the sheathing. We can hold the sash proportions so the house still looks correct from Main Street.
Will the village let me put vinyl on my old Northport house?
In many cases, yes, but it depends on the property and the review the village applies. Some streets and individual homes get a closer look at material and profile. Where that applies, fiber cement or vinyl shake that matches the original exposure usually passes more easily than smooth wide-lap vinyl. We check the property before quoting and prepare what the Building Department asks for.
Why Northport Homeowners Choose AP
- In-house crews. Our own installers do the detail work on Northport's older homes. We do not hand a Victorian with original trim to a subcontractor.

- Based nearby in East Northport. Northport Village is five minutes from our shop down Larkfield Road or Ocean Avenue. We can be at your house for a measure or a check-in almost any day.
