Siding for Fort Salonga's Hillside and Shore Homes
Fort Salonga is quieter and more wooded than the hamlets around it, and the houses sit on bigger, hillier lots. The stock runs from 1950s and 60s ranches and splits along Fort Salonga Road and Bread and Cheese Hollow Road to larger colonials and contemporaries built in the 70s through 90s on the slopes above Crab Meadow and near Indian Hills Country Club. A few older farmhouses survive off Route 25A. AP Siding & Windows installs cedar shake, vinyl shake, horizontal lap, insulated vinyl, board and batten, and fiber cement here, and we are used to walls that drop two stories to a sloped grade.
The north side of Fort Salonga faces Long Island Sound across Crab Meadow Beach and the marsh, and the wind that comes off the water carries salt up the hill farther than you would think. Those homes get corrosion-resistant fasteners, reinforced flashing, and materials that do not need paint. Away from the shore the hamlet is heavily treed, and shaded walls on the hillside lots stay damp through the seasons. There we concentrate on drainage behind the siding and ventilation so the sheathing dries. Older cedar on the estate-era homes has often been patched for decades and needs honest repair before anything new goes over it.
Siding styles we install
Horizontal Vinyl Lap Siding
The classic look for the capes, ranches, and colonials that fill Fort Salonga. Low maintenance, available in dozens of colors, and never needs painting.
Vinyl Shake & Shingle Siding
The look of cedar shakes without staining, splitting, or rotting. Works on a whole home or as an accent on gables and dormers.
Board & Batten Siding
Vertical siding for farmhouse, modern, and coastal exteriors, often combined with lap siding for contrast.
Fiber Cement Siding
The premium option: heavy, fire-resistant, and very durable, with a real painted-wood look.
Signs it's time to replace your siding
- Cracked, warped, or loose panels, especially after a storm
- Faded or chalky color that no longer cleans up
- Soft spots, rot, or mildew along seams and trim
- Water stains or peeling paint on interior walls
- Drafty rooms and rising heating and cooling bills
Siding and windows in one project
Replacing windows at the same time as siding is the smartest way to do both. With the old siding off, new windows can be flashed and sealed properly on every side, and all the exterior trim comes out clean and consistent. You get one crew and one schedule for the whole exterior.

Fort Salonga Areas and Landmarks
Crab Meadow, along the beach road and the marsh on the north edge, has the most exposed homes and the closest view of the Sound. The hillside streets off Fort Salonga Road near Indian Hills Country Club hold 70s and 80s colonials and contemporaries on acre lots. Bread and Cheese Hollow Road, which carries the Huntington and Smithtown line, has older homes and some of the hamlet's remaining farm parcels. South toward Route 25A and the East Northport line the housing is 50s and 60s ranches and splits. On the Smithtown side near Sunken Meadow State Park the lots are wooded and the houses mixed in age.
Fort Salonga, Crab Meadow, and Both Townships
We cover all of Fort Salonga on both sides of Bread and Cheese Hollow Road, from Crab Meadow and the Sound shore south to Route 25A, and from the Northport line east to Sunken Meadow and Kings Park. East Northport and Northport are next door, and Kings Park and Commack share the route.
All siding townsFrequently asked questions
What does siding cost on a Fort Salonga hillside home?
Hillside houses often have a walk-out lower level, which means more wall than the footprint suggests, and that is where the price starts. Add the material you choose, how many layers come off, and the trim and window wrap. Vinyl sits at the bottom of the range and fiber cement at the top. We measure every elevation including the downhill side and put the figure in writing.
Which town issues siding permits in Fort Salonga?
Fort Salonga is split. Addresses west of Bread and Cheese Hollow Road are in the Town of Huntington and go through its Building Division. Addresses east of it are in the Town of Smithtown and use that Building Department. A like-for-like re-side is usually exempt in both towns, but sheathing replacement or new openings may need a filing. We confirm your parcel and file with the right office.
What siding holds up near Crab Meadow and the Sound?
North-facing walls near Crab Meadow take salt and steady wind off the water. Fiber cement and insulated vinyl both handle that without paint and without the chalking that cheap vinyl shows. Vinyl shake gives the shingle look that fits the shore. Real cedar works on the right house but needs sealing on the weather side. We use stainless or hot-dipped hardware on every Sound-side job.
How long does a siding job take in Fort Salonga?
A vinyl re-side on an average-size Fort Salonga ranch or colonial runs three to five working days. The larger hillside homes with walk-out levels, fiber cement installs, and any job where old cedar needs repair take longer. Wind off the Sound costs more days here than inland, especially in spring and fall. We set the schedule after the measure and update you if weather intervenes.
Can I replace windows and siding at the same time in Fort Salonga?
Yes. On the exposed homes near the Sound it is the best way to get a sealed wall, because we flash each new window to the sheathing before the siding goes on. We install double-hung, casement, bay and bow, slider, awning, basement, and custom-shape windows in vinyl or fiberglass. The 70s and 80s contemporaries with large fixed glass are a common combined project here.
My Fort Salonga house has old cedar that has been patched for years. Can you save it or should it go?
We will tell you honestly after we look. Cedar that is sound can stay as a substrate under house wrap, or be re-sided with new cedar shake if you want the real thing. Cedar that is rotted at the courses below windows and at the corners, which is what we usually find on the estate-era homes, has to come off. Either way the sheathing gets repaired before new siding.
