Siding at the Tip of the Fork: Orient

Orient is as far east as the North Fork goes, and it is one of the best-preserved hamlets in Suffolk County. The village center around Village Lane, the Oysterponds Historical Society buildings and the lanes toward Orient Harbor is almost entirely 1700s and 1800s houses under cedar shingle, with a historic district on the National Register. Outside the center there are Main Road farmhouses, beach cottages toward Orient Point, and a few newer homes on former farm land. AP Siding & Windows installs real cedar shake and board and batten to match the hamlet, plus fiber cement, vinyl shake and insulated vinyl where that fits, along with windows and roofing.

Orient has Gardiners Bay and Orient Harbor on the south, Long Island Sound on the north, and Plum Gut at the point. Wind reaches every house from somewhere, and salt is in the air on calm days. Cedar has stood here for two centuries because it was nailed over open sheathing that let it dry, and we build modern cedar jobs the same way with a rainscreen and breathable wrap. On vinyl and fiber cement we use stainless fasteners, reinforced starter and corner details and heavy flashing at window heads. Nothing out here can be installed the way it would be in a sheltered inland subdivision.

Siding styles we install

Horizontal Vinyl Lap Siding

The classic look for capes, ranches, and colonials. Low maintenance, dozens of colors, and never needs painting.

Cedar & Cedar-Look Shake Siding

The signature look out east. Choose real cedar, or cedar-look vinyl and fiber cement shingles that skip the staining and splitting.

Board & Batten Siding

Vertical siding for farmhouse, modern, and coastal exteriors, often mixed with lap siding for contrast.

Fiber Cement Siding

The premium option: heavy, fire-resistant, and very durable, with a real painted-wood look.

Signs it's time to replace your siding

  • Cracked, warped, or loose panels, especially after a storm
  • Faded or chalky color that no longer cleans up
  • Soft spots, rot, or mildew along seams and trim
  • Water stains or peeling paint on interior walls
  • Drafty rooms and rising heating and cooling bills

Siding and windows in one project

Replacing windows at the same time as siding is the smartest way to do both. With the old siding off, new windows can be flashed and sealed properly on every side, and all the exterior trim comes out clean and consistent. You get one crew and one schedule for the whole exterior.

Orient Areas We Serve

Village Lane and the streets around the Orient Congregational Church, Poquatuck Park and the Oysterponds Historical Society form the historic core, with cedar-clad houses that have been in the same families for generations. Orient Harbor and the lanes off King Street and Navy Street face the bay. Main Road east of the village runs past farms to Orient Point and the ferry terminal, with beach cottages near Orient Beach State Park. The north side along Sound beaches like Truman's Beach has cottages and newer homes on the bluff. West of the causeway, the Orient side of Dam Pond has a few waterfront houses before East Marion begins.

Orient, Orient Point and the Causeway

We cover the whole of Orient from the East Marion causeway out to Orient Point and the ferry, including the historic village center, the harbor lanes and the Sound-side cottages. It is the last stop on our eastern North Fork block, so we group Orient jobs with Greenport and Southold work and keep the crew out east for consecutive days.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to re-shingle a cedar house in Orient?

Cedar is a premium material and the historic houses here carry a lot of trim, so expect more than a vinyl job. The price depends on measured square footage, the grade of shingle, tear-off and what we find underneath, and trim and window wrap. If vinyl shake or fiber cement suits your house, the cost drops. We measure before any number goes on paper.

Who issues siding permits in Orient, and is historic review involved?

Orient is a hamlet, so the Town of Southold Building Department issues permits. A like-for-like re-side usually does not need one, but repairs to sheathing or framing, new window sizes, and any facade change on a designated landmark do. Many Orient houses are landmarked through the historic district, which means a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission first. We confirm your status.

Does real cedar still make sense in Orient with the salt exposure?

It does, and it is the right answer for most of the historic center. The trick is installing it so it dries: a rainscreen gap, breathable wrap, stainless nails and a drip at the bottom. It grays on the water side faster than the lee side, which is the look most Orient owners want anyway. For newer houses, fiber cement or vinyl shake cuts upkeep.

How long will a siding job take out in Orient?

A vinyl re-side on an average Orient cottage or cape runs three to five working days. Cedar on a historic house is slower, and fiber cement takes longer too. Orient is the end of the line for us, so we block the job and keep the crew out east until done. Plum Gut wind can cost a day.

Can you do windows and siding at the same time on my Orient house?

Yes, and on the old houses it is the only sensible way. With the shingles off we can install new wood-look vinyl or fiberglass double-hungs with correct divided-light patterns, plus casements, bay and bow, sliders, awning and custom shapes, and flash them properly to the sheathing. On landmarked facades we match the original sash layout so the Historic Preservation Commission review is straightforward.

Is Orient in a flood zone, and does that change a siding job?

Much of the harbor side, the point and the causeway lanes sit in FEMA flood zones, and some parcels fall under Town Trustees jurisdiction. Siding alone is usually treated as maintenance, but a job that includes substantial sheathing or framing replacement can count toward the substantial improvement threshold. We review the flood map before quoting and tell you plainly whether anything extra applies.

Why Orient Homeowners Choose AP

  • In-house crews. Orient cedar work is done by AP's own installers who know how to nail a shingle course straight on a 200-year-old wall. We do not hand it to a sub.
  • Written price after we measure. We measure every elevation, check the sheathing and trim, note landmark and flood status, and give you one written price that holds.
  • Based nearby in East Northport. Orient is about an hour and a half from our shop, the farthest point we serve on the North Fork. We are straightforward about that and schedule Orient jobs in blocks so the crew stays out east until your house is finished.
